What does "scanning" a cars transmission do?

Answer: This procedure involves attaching a vehicle diagnostic computer to a terminal in your car. This computer device is used to communicate with your vehicle computer to determine if any trouble codes are present and also to "read" the output from the  numerous electrical sensors that feed information to the vehicle computer. All of this data is useful in determining the integrity of your electrical control system for the car transmission. Vehicle diagnostics scanners have become a very important in the auto diagnostic process.
